Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil
This
panoramic photograph of Rio de Janeiro was taken by Christopher Gjevre.
It features a view of Rio as seen looking across Botafogo Bay.
In the distance is Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) on top of
the mountain of Corcovado.
At the far left is Copacabana Beach.
Copacabana is home to most of Rio’s middle and top-end hotels.
The area has many restaurants, bars, shops, casinos and souvenir
stands that cater to tourists.
Rio de Janeiro was discovered on January 1, 1502 by Portuguese
navigators who mistook the entrance of Guanabara Bay for the mouth of a
river (Rio).
The name Rio de Janeiro means River of January.
