Chicago, Illinois

This aerial panoramic photograph of Chicago was taken by James Blakeway.  This view features Navy Pier with its shops, restaurants, and Ferris wheel ride.  To the left of Navy Pier is the mouth of the Chicago River as it joins with Lake Michigan.  Continuing further left is the 110-floor Sears Tower, with its twin antennas, and Grant Park, with the Buckingham Fountain in the park’s center.  To the right is the John Hancock building, with its red and white antennas.  At the far right is the area of Chicago known as the Gold Coast.  Chicago has the world’s largest inland port and the largest concentration of rail, truck, and air transportation.

Chicago, Illinois - Series 2

This panoramic photograph of Chicago was taken by Christopher Gjevre.  It features a twilight view of downtown Chicago as seen from Lake Michigan, the third largest of the Great Lakes and the only Great Lake entirely in the United States.  The tallest building on the left is the 1454-foot, 110-floor Sears Tower.  The tallest building on the right is the John Hancock building.  The Ferris wheel is located on the popular Navy Pier.  Chicago was incorporated in 1837 and quickly became a major grain exporter.  Industries followed and the railroads fanned out from the city to deliver Chicago’s goods throughout the nation.

Chicago, Illinois - Series 3

This panoramic photograph of Chicago was taken by James Blakeway. It features a twilight view of downtown Chicago and partially-frozen Lake Michigan. The world's tallest building, the Sears Tower, is easily identified by its multi-tiered design and two communications antennae. Moving right is the column-like Standard Oil Building and the John Hancock Center, with dual antennae. Known as the windy city, Chicago is the third largest metropolitan area in the United States.
